Basic Knowledge 2: What Are the Features and Value of Japan-Made Models?

Basic Knowledge

If you were buying an SKX Style GMT, which would you choose: a Japan-made model or an overseas-produced model?

There is no difference in performance between Japan-made and overseas-produced models.
So why are Japan-made models so highly sought after around the world?

Features of Japan-Made SKX Style GMT Models

To get straight to the point, there are only three visible differences between Japan-made and overseas-produced models.

Basic Knowledge 1: What Is “SKX Style”?
Learn what SKX Style means, including the history and appeal of the SKX007, SKX009 and SKX011, MADE IN JAPAN models, and the SKX DNA carried into the GMT lineup.

As mentioned in the previous article, unlike some older Japan-made SKX models, today’s GMT models do not carry small details such as the additional “21 JEWELS” text on the dial.

Unfortunately, that kind of playful detail that appealed to enthusiasts was not carried over.

There are no playful dial differences like those that appealed to SKX enthusiasts.

The “MADE IN JAPAN” marking is also printed on the see-through case back.
This one is at least visible to the naked eye — just barely.

So, what do you think? Those are the only differences between the Japan-made and overseas-produced models.

The Value of Japan-Made SKX Style GMT Models

SEIKO 5 Sports was originally focused mainly on overseas markets, and even Japan-made models were sold primarily for overseas markets.
If you wanted to buy one in Japan, you generally had to rely on parallel imports.

SEIKO 5 Sports, which had primarily been marketed overseas, was relaunched in 2019 and began a full-scale rollout in Japan.

As a result, compared with the past, Japan-made models have become much easier to obtain in Japan.

Both Japan-made and overseas-produced models are manufactured under SEIKO’s production management and quality control, so there is no difference in performance between them.

In other words, current Japan-made SKX Style GMT models do not have any special advantage in terms of performance.

What they do have is the story behind them — and a sense of pride.

What you gain is the satisfaction of owning a MADE IN JAPAN model.

JDM Models Sought After by Watch Fans Around the World

In Japan, MADE IN JAPAN models are relatively easy to obtain, but…

Overseas, Japan-market models are often seen as something special and are commonly described as JDM models, Japanese Domestic Market models, or Japan-only models.

If it’s Levi’s, I want one made at the Valencia Street factory.
If it’s SEIKO, I want a JDM model.

To me, they carry the same kind of appeal. ^^

The SBSC021 Ukiyo-e Model Became Popular Around the World

The SBSC021 Ukiyo-e model, a Japan-made, Japan-exclusive model, has attracted attention from watch fans around the world as a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) model.

Many foreign visitors to Japan bought the model, and it quickly disappeared from physical stores.

Inbound tourism demand appears to have played a major role in its popularity.

I think the appeal of “a SEIKO you can only buy in Japan” strongly fueled the desire of overseas fans to own one.

The Reality of Buying the SBSC021

The model that first drew me into the world of the SKX Style GMT was this Japan-exclusive SBSC021 with its ukiyo-e bezel.

It was actually the very first model I ordered. I was relieved when the order went through, but…

I placed my order on July 5, 2026 — and at the moment, it’s no longer even possible to place an order.

On August 3, 2026, the shop contacted me to say that only a small quantity had arrived and they were unable to allocate one to my order.

As of August 26, 2026, it still has not shipped.

At this point, I’d almost rather they just discontinue it already~~~~( ゚Д゚)

Summary

Being MADE IN JAPAN does not make the watch perform any better.

Even so, there are people who see value in owning a SEIKO made in Japan.

And that’s exactly why my SBSC021 still hasn’t arrived. ( ノД`)シ

And overseas, that value is often felt even more strongly through the idea of JDM.

Not performance, but story and pride.

I think that is one of the reasons people choose a Japan-made SKX Style GMT.
